Nursery visit checklist

Before you go

• Read the nursery's latest Ofsted report
• Check opening hours and the days you need
• Ask if they take funded hours, and about any extra charges
• Write down your child's routine: naps, food, allergies

Look and listen

• Children seem happy, busy and settled
• Staff get down to children's level and chat with them
• Rooms are clean, bright and safe, with things at child height
• There's outdoor space they use every day
• Children's artwork and learning are on display
• Nappy changing areas and toilets are clean

Ask about the people

• Who will be my child's key person?
• How long have most staff worked here?
• What are the staff-to-child ratios in each room?
• What training do staff have, such as paediatric first aid and safeguarding?

Ask about the day

• What does a typical day look like?
• What food is served, and how are allergies handled?
• How do naps and sleep work?
• How do you help with talking, behaviour and getting ready for school?
• How do you support children with additional needs?

Ask about money

• What are the fees, and what's included?
• Are there extra charges with funded hours, such as meals, nappies or trips?
• What are the notice period and deposit?
• How does settling-in work, and is it charged?
• How will you keep me updated: app, photos, daily notes?

After the visit

• Did it feel right? Would your child be happy here?
• Were your questions answered clearly?
• Is there a space when you need it?
